“In its Concluding Observations to India in 2014, the CEDAW Committee called upon the State party to remove restrictions on the work of human rights defenders. Instead, India is currently engaging in the arbitrary detention of activists such as women student leaders who peacefully protested against the CAA – putting their lives at risk in the middle of a pandemic to which prisoners are especially defenceless. On India’s Independence Day, we raise our voices against state repression, policy brutality, Islamophobia and the deplorable conditions of the prison system.”
